Running is known to be a great exercise for people looking to get fit, lose weight and clear their minds. It is not easy however, and simply getting out of the door and running may end up causing injury! Here are the ways to ease into running gently to avoid hurting yourself.
- Start with a good pair of shoes – running trainers are built to support the foot better and prevent injury
- Begin slowly – start with a few minutes of walking and add 30 seconds or so of running, alternating with walking. This allows you to build up your stamina over a number of weeks.
- Follow a guided program such as the Couch to 5K plan – there is a great version of the C25K on the NHS website which has an audio podcast you can listen to at the same time.
- Warm up and cool down every time you run – this will help to minimise injury and prepare your muscles for work.
